If someone told you that you were going to try something and fail, would you still try? In my Marketing 250 class, Web Business Creation, we are not expected to succeed and in fact we probably won't be "successful" in the businesses we create. But I'm still going to try. One of the things I have learned in the last few years is that failure is one of the best teachers, but even knowing that I think if someone told me I was going to fail I would still have a hard time trying to even start at all.
This week as I have been brainstorming business ideas and considering the model I want to try, I have been trying to look at each business from the perspective of failure and success. If I start a business doing X and I'm successful, what would that look like? And if I fail, will I regret having even tried? I want to find a business idea and model that even if (when) it fails, I will still feel like I was successful in achieving some kind of goal.
For me I have decided that my failure goal is that I want to be more comfortable with failure and learn that even if my business fails, I will still be okay. Now granted I still want to try to be successful with it, and the things I have been learning in the class so far will probably help me, I am trying to ensure I gain something even in the worst case scenario
Speaking of the things that I have learned so far, I have been having a lot of fun with the google keyword planner. There are a lot of interesting statistics and implications of the data that could help me to have a greater chance of success and I want to understand all of it! One little thing I found while exploring the tool is the different views and columns you can setup for your plans. My favorite is the Competition (indexed values) column because it shows you the percentage of ad slots that are filled. So for example if there are 1,000 slots for ads each day, a score of 50 would mean that only 500 slots were filled and you can get ad impressions for a cheaper price.
